REACH
Mentoring Project

After successfully completing his Candidate summer, each REACH student joins his fellow classmates in the REACH Mentor Project. In what's known as the "REACH Nest," approximately 5-6 REACH students are assigned to a Mentor Team. The Mentor Team is comprised of a REACH summer counselor and an adult REACH alum (age 21 and over). By assigning both a high school-aged student from one of our partner high schools and a working professinal, REACH seeks to introduce REACH students to a young men who have already achieved their shared goal of winning a high school scholarship, attending college, and securing employment in their post-academic career. Mentors can provide REACH students with motivation and support (social, intellectual, and spiritual) beyond what is available in their homes and schools. Each year approximately 35 mentors participate in the program.

The role of the Mentor Team is multi-faceted. They are to be an academic resource and support system, role models and older peers who takes interest in the social, intellectual and spiritual development of their mentees. This can happen in a variety of ways, and like all relationships, the REACH Mentor Team will discover, over time, how to best 'cultivate their nest' and help their mentees based on the unique gifts, talents, and the interests they share. Ideally, the relationship will span the three years while mentees are REACH members.
