Regis Community Gathers in Prayer for Pope Francis

Regis students, faculty, and staff gathered on Thursday for a prayer service for Pope Francis, celebrating his life, mourning his passing, and asking God for the strength to be vessels for his legacy.

"We gather together in a time of mourning and prayer," said Mr. Michael Libunao-Macalintal, Director of Campus Ministry. "We gather here today in love and remembrance, united in grief yet strengthened by faith. In moments of loss, we turn to one another for solace and support, finding comfort in our shared presence and the promises of God's love."

Philip Liew ’26, one of 10 Regis students who attended Pope Francis's funeral last weekend, spoke to classmates about his experience at the Vatican and reflected on Francis's legacy.

"Pope Francis has returned back into the hands of our Father, but his legacy lives on in each and every one of us," said Liew. "Jesuits, Catholic students, human beings — he called us to go to the margins of our society and bring the Church to the people who need it the most. And now we are the ones called to fulfill his mission."

The Regis community has marked the passing of Pope Francis in numerous ways since his death on April 21.

A memorial was placed at the base of the statue of St. John Francis Regis near the doors of the chapel, while black bunting hangs above the school’s front doors on 84th Street. Pope Francis was remembered during our Easter Mass on Monday, as well as during a memorial Mass on Wednesday.
