Opportunity Statement
What is the context?
What is the Regis mission?

“Regis High School transforms Catholic young men through an academically exceptional Jesuit education in a caring community that inspires leadership, generosity, and a lifelong passion for service as Men for Others. Regis is tuition free and merit based, giving special consideration to families in need of financial assistance.”

How is Regis both Jesuit and unique?

Regis is a member of the Jesuit Network of Schools, so we form our students in accordance with the “Grad @ Grad” and we form our adult community in accordance with the broader principles of Ignatian spirituality. At the same time, we are the only Jesuit school in North America that is 100% tuition free. We are also the only Jesuit school in North America that requires admitted students to be baptized Catholics.

Why are we searching?

In November 2021, our current Principal, Fr. Anthony Andreassi CO, announced that his religious community, The Brooklyn Oratory (Brooklyn, NY), requires his full time services no later than the end of the 2021-22 school year.

What is our point of view?
On challenges in the world

Over the next decade, Regis must bravely confront several tectonic shifts and equip our students to navigate them:

  • More socioeconomic divergences.
  • More political polarization.
  • More “epistemic crises” (ie, dramatic disagreements about facts and truth).
  • More volatility in recruiting and retaining talent.
  • More attention paid to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Fewer high school aged males in the zip codes from which Regis recruits.
  • More disaffiliation from the Catholic Church.

In light of these challenges, the ways in which we activate the Regis mission will be more important than ever.

On opportunities in high school education

We believe that secondary education is evolving unevenly. Some schools are already ahead of the tectonic trends noted above, while many others are falling further behind. Over the next decade, we believe that:

  • The values and skills expressed in the Grad @ Grad will grow in importance to our students' long-term success and wellness.
  • “Lifeworthy” and creative curriculum will offer students a competitive advantage in college and the workplace.
  • Mission-driven schools will place increasing importance on creating conditions for their students to apply their learning to social impact challenges.
  • Our tuition-free model will sustain our ability to fulfill our mission and our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. (The school was founded on the basis of equity--it has always awarded scholarships by providing special consideration to those who could not otherwise afford it.)
  • It is more important than ever for Regis to form active leaders within the Catholic Church.

On Regis at this moment

Three time-bound factors are also shaping the context for the search for our next Principal:

  • Strategic Plan: We are in the midst of implementing our strategic plan, whose remaining opportunities are ambitious.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: In 2020, the Board of Trustees established DEI as a strategic priority for the school. The faculty and staff have committed themselves to doing that work as an integral part of our Jesuit mission and identity.
  • Needs of the community: Surveys have revealed that the community hopes for someone who will prioritize communication, fostering trust, and updating the curriculum.
  • President search: A search for the next full-time President of Regis is currently underway, and the Board of Trustees anticipates announcing that person's selection in early 2022. That individual will make the final decision about Regis' next Principal.

What is the role?

The next Principal of Regis will need strengths in three categories: Vision, Execution, and People Leadership.

Vision: the next Principal will need to...

  • Articulate connection between Regis' mission and the school's strategic plan and vision.
  • Translate the President's / strategic plan's vision into programs and other operational realities.
  • Articulate the ways in which learning is evolving in our rapidly changing world.
  • Inspire innovation while honoring Regis' time-honored DNA.

Execution: the next Principal will need to...

  • “Over”-communicate with all stakeholders.
  • Coach others for growth and development.
  • Measure progress against day-to-day goals as well as strategic plan aspirations.
  • Oversee the management of the academic and extracurricular program.
  • Learn rapidly.

People Leadership: the next Principal will need to...

  • Develop relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Seek dialogue.
  • Care for and celebrate students, faculty, and staff.

Finally, and most important of all, the Principal should be a practicing Catholic who will actively model Regis' Jesuit and Catholic identity.

What are the key details?

  • 97 faculty and staff
  • 537 students from 236 zip codes in and around New York City.
  • Grades 9-12 (notably, students must enter at 9th grade; transfers are not allowed and if a student resigns his scholarship he may not return).
  • Academic Program
  • REACH, our middle school program, whose mission is to “empower high-achieving young men from underserved communities as Catholic leaders committed to faith, scholarship, and service.”
  • Regis students participate in a wide range of enriching extracurricular activities, including its state- and national championship-winning speech and debate team, student government, intramural sports, cultural societies, band, theatre, the school newspaper, and other publications. Regis competes in New York City's Catholic High School Athletic Association with teams in basketball, baseball, soccer, track and field, cross country, golf, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee.
  • Relationships: Regis is a member of the Jesuit Schools Network. We are also a member of NYSAIS. We have warm, working relationships with several all-girls schools, including Dominican Academy, Marymount, and Convent of the Sacred Heart.
