Centennial Pilgrimage
A group of alumni and friends of Regis joined Rev. Philip G. Judge, S.J. '80 on a pilgrimage to Spain and Rome this summer as part of the Centennial year event celebrations. The pilgrimage included guided visits to historical and religious sites and liturgies at inspiring chapels and churches. Provided here is a sampling of archived photographs documenting that trip.

1948 Basketball Champions
In the September 2014 Centennial eNews we provided background on the 1930 Regis Football champions, possibly the first sports championship team in Regis history. Here we recap the 1948 basketball champions, who earned arguably the most impressive sports accomplishment in Regis history, the title of National Schoolboy Champions.

Regis Football Champs
The Regis varsity football team was first fielded in 1923, but the sport would ultimately have a short life at the school, with the team playing its last season in the fall of 1930. In the Winter 2001 edition of the Regis Alumni News magazine, an article written by Col. John M. Godfrey '30 detailed his memories of the 1929-1930 Regis football team, a squad that earned the title of Champions of the Metropolitan High Schools. Read more here.

85th Street Foyer
The intricately-designed walls and ceiling on display in the 85th Street Foyer were restored this summer. The space, which has practically remained unchanged since its construction in 1914, is now vibrant and alive, and is a must-see for anyone interested in admiring the architecture of our historic landmark building. Provided here are archived photographs along with photographs of the newly restored space.

The Regis Green Roof
This summer was the fourth anniversary of the installation of Regis High School's green roof. The Spring 2010 edition of the Regis Alumni News magazine featured a story about greening efforts at Regis. A reprint of the roof feature from that article is provided here.

The Waterfront Priest
John M. Corridan, S.J. '28 (1911-1984) fought against corruption and organized crime on the New York City waterfront. He served as the inspiration for the character of Father Barry in the classic film On the Waterfront. An article about Fr. Corridan, which was first published in the Summer 2009 Regis Alumni News Magazine, is republished here.

Robert Giroux '31
Robert F. Giroux '31 (1914-2008) was an influential editor and publisher, working with some of the most recognizable names in 20th century fiction including T.S. Eliot, George Orwell and Virginia Woolf. He also published the first books written by Jack Kerouac and Flannery O'Connor. Read more about his career here.

An Early Graduate
The Summer 2009 Alumni News Magazine featured a story about archived information found on Raymond P. Whearty, a member of the Pioneer class of 1918. The files provide a small glimpse into the life of one of the first Regis graduates. A reprint of that article is provided here.

Father Regis
The just-retired John Connelly '56 P'90'99 set the record for a lay faculty member's total years of service. He came close to the Jesuit record set by Rev. Stephen V. Duffy, S.J., who served 56 years, earning him the nickname "Father Regis". Read the Regis Alumni magazine's tribute to Fr. Duffy that was published following his death in 2005.

First Day Reflections
On February 2, 1964, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edwin B. Broderick '34 delivered a sermon at a mass said in honor of the Regis High School Golden Jubilee. The words of Broderick, who served as Bishop of Albany from 1969 to 1976, are reprinted here for you to read and download.

Regis Time Capsule
At the baccalaureate mass earlier this month, Fr. Judge blessed a Regis time capsule which, among other items, contained results from a survey where current students speculated on what life will be like for a Regian 50 years from now. The Tomasulo Algorithm
The ability for elements of a computer code to be written and processed non-sequentially is a hardware algorithm established by Robert Tomasulo '52. His work formed the basis of what we all have in our high performance computer processors today. Read more here.

Olympics
During this 2014 Winter Olympics season, we wondered if any Regis alums had ever competed in an Olympic event. Our searching led us to John Nonna '64, who competed as a Fencer representing the United States in the 1972 Olympics. Read about his experience in Olympic competition here.

Actors & Directors
While Regis High School was being constructed in the Spring of 1914, the Foundress and her family visited Franz Xavier Wernz, S.J., the twenty-fifth Superior General of the Society of Jesus, in Rome. There, he presented her with a unique gift now on permanent display in the Regis Chapel. Learn more about that gift here.

Academy Awards
With the 2014 Oscars just a little over a week away, we wondered: How many Regians have walked away with a coveted Academy Award? Of the approximately 2,700 statuettes that have been handed out since the initial awards in 1929, we know of two awarded to Regians, and at least one more Regian was nominated for an Academy Award. 1918's 25th Reunion
70 years ago this month, the February 1944 Regis Alumni Newsletter documented the then recently-celebrated 25th anniversary dinner for the Class of 1918, the first class to graduate from Regis. Reprinted here are reflections on the milestone celebrated by that pioneer class all those years ago. The reflections touch on some memories all sons of Regis carry and remind us—as Virgil wrote—that "one day, we will look back on this and smile."

A Regian in the NBA
Tom Kelly '41 has the unique distinction of being the only Regian to play professional basketball in the highest of arenas. In 1948 he was drafted by the Boston Celtics of the Basketball Association of America, which would become the NBA a year later. Read about Kelly and his career here.
